Who We Are
The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) manages the California state hospital system, which provides mental health services to patients admitted into DSH facilities. The department strives to provide effective treatment in a safe environment and in a fiscally responsible manner.
In fiscal year 2021-2022, the department served more than 12,000 patients through its hospital system, conditional release programs, community-based programs, and jail treatment programs. We currently employ nearly 13,000 staff in 300 classifications. We have locations in Atascadero, Coalinga, Los Angeles, Napa, and San Bernardino.
